A water-resistant paper covered gypsum board has at least one of its surface paper sheets bearing a dried composition comprising a tall oil and an aliphatic hydrocarbon wax, together with a drying oil and/or a fatty acid ester of pentaerythritol. The composition may be applied as an emulsion to the paper sheet before formation of the board and dried in situ on the board by the application of heat. The gypsum core preferably contains asphalt and wax. Specified hydrocarbox waxes are petroleum waxes, low molecular homo- and co-polymers of ethylene and propylene, pentadiene polymers and methylated paraffins. Specified drying oils are linseed, soya bean, oiticica, tung and safflower oils.</p> |
