In the process for manufacturing ophthalmic lenses, defects appear in the lens which are the result, in general, of the lenses' polishing and refining. These defects may be pits, scratches, polishing defects and also bubbles, impurities, etc. The device is based on the defraction produced in the defects when a laser-light beam strikes it. The defraction produced is detected by a photometer, which detects the presence of the defect. A mechanism ensures that the beam sweeps across the entire lens. <IMAGE>
