PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent backward movement of a piston, limit a maximum moving distance of the piston, and limit backlash, in a hydraulic tensioner. SOLUTION: This tensioner comprises a piston 2 having a plurality of grooves 11 in an outer side to be received slidably in a hole 15 of a housing 20, piston spring 4 energizing this piston to the outward from the hole 15, check valve 21 provided between a fluid chamber 22 and a pressure fluid source 25, and an external rack member 3 arranged in the groove of the housing 20 in the outward in a radial direction of the piston 2. Further, a radial direction extension part 12 is provided in an upper end of the external rack member 3, and an axial directional movement of the piston 2 is limited by making this radial direction extension part 12 touch the groove 11 in a piston outer side, and a lower end of the external rack member 3 is arranged slidably in the groove of the housing 20.
