PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact zoom lens having a larger viewing angle at wide-angle end. SOLUTION: This zoom lens includes a 1st lens group G1 having negative refractive power, a 2nd lens group G2 having positive refractive power and a 3rd lens group G3 having positive refractive power in order from the object side. In the case of performing variable power from the wide-angle end to telephoto end, the 1st lens group stands still, the 2nd lens group is moved toward the object and the 3rd lens group is moved, then the 3rd lens group is moved toward the object so as to perform focusing from the long-distance object to the short-distance object. The lens satisfies expressions: 0.15<|(x2/s12w)/(f1/ fw)|<1.0, 0.01<c23w2/(f3*fw)<0.5 and 0.18<s23t2/(f3*ft)<5.
