PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new hydraulic tensioner oscillatably constituted as a whole. SOLUTION: This hydraulic tensioner comprises an almost cylindrical body 20 having a bottom part (base end) 27, piston 40 having a closed tip end 44 and a reverse side opening end to be slidably received in the body 20, with the opening end forming a fluid chamber 23 between itself and the body 20, spring 60 arranged in the piston 40 to outward energize it from the body 20, and a check valve 100 arranged in a flow path 24 between the fluid chamber 23 and a pressurized fluid source to allow fluid to flow in the fluid chamber 23 and to impede its reverse flow. Further, the tip end 44 of the piston 40 is pivotally supportably connected to a tension arm 50, and the bottom part of the body 20 is pivotally supportably mounted on a mounting block in an engine side.
