Benzopyranone derivatives produced by microorganisms, procedures for obtaining them and use thereof as inhibitors of metalobetalactamases. This invention relates to new benzopyranone type compounds, of the general formula I, in which R1 and R2 are variables, which can be obtained from microorganisms. Metabolites of this type have been isolated from fermentations of microorganisms which belong to the genus Chaetomium or other taxonomically related genera. The most appropriate ones are enzymatic inhibitors, especially of metalobetalactamases. The invention also relates to derivatives of said compounds which can be obtained chemically or by enzymatic modification, to the methods for obtaining these compounds which involve the cultivation of microorganisms, to the isolation of active metabolites or the derivatives thereof, and to the use of such substances for the treatment of bacterial infections, and to new formulations which contain said substances. <IMAGE>
