PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize photographing in which sensitivity is hardly lowered by an inexpensive compact device even in the case of taking both right and left pictures or much more pictures within the time of one field of an NTSC system. SOLUTION: This stereoscopic picture taking device 6 is constituted of an optical system 4 forming the image of a subject, plural liquid crystal optical shutters 1 and 2 arranged at positions separate from the optical system by a specified distance with the optical axis of the optical system as center and electrically driven, and an image data conversion element 5 converting the formed image of the subject into an image signal. In the device 6 the plural liquid crystal optical shutters are constituted so that they may be actuated to be opened/closed alternately at specified time intervals and consist of liquid crystal cells using chiral smectic liquid crystal.
