SIDE FACE LIGHT EMISSION OPTICAL FIBER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a side face light emission optical fiber which is small in luminance unevenness, capable of emitting light uniformly from its side face and excellent in appearance. SOLUTION: This side face light emission optical fiber consists of a core 1 for transmitting light, a clad 2 disposed on the outer periphery of the core 1 and a covering material 3 covering the outside surface of the clad 2. The clad 2 is formed by a silica aerogel 4. The covering material 3 is provided with a light scattering transmissible layer 5. The silica aerogel 4 constituted the clad 2 has a low refractive index and increases a photodetecting angle to make it possible to highly obtain transmission efficiency of light. The light oozing from the core 1 to the clad 2 can be diffused and projected outside by the scattering transmissible layer 5 of the covering material 3.
