PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the image quality of an image pickup device such as a CCD by preventing deterioration in a video image caused by smears due to high luminance data and a fault in image processing, when photographing an object in a high speed photographing mode. SOLUTION: This video camera is provided with a CCD 1 having a solid-stage image pickup section, a plurality of black reference detection elements 13-16 which are formed by shielding the elements of a prescribed range among photoelectric conversion elements from light, calculation sections 41, 51 that integrate data from a plurality of the black reference detection elements 13-16 and calculate the mean value, a microcomputer 91 that detects whether or not the calculation result of the calculation sections 41, 51 exceeds a prescribed value, and a changeover means SW 53 that replaces data from the detection element whose output exceeds a prescribed value with other data, on the basis of the detection result by the microcomputer 91.
