PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To leak air mixed in a fluid chamber into the atmosphere. SOLUTION: This hydraulic tensioner comprises a hollow piston 40 slidably received in a hole 23 of a housing 20 to form a fluid chamber 22 between the piston and the hole 23, having an upper end 41 formed with a passage 55, piston spring 60 arranged inside the piston 40 to energize it in a protruding direction from the hole 23, check valve 100 provided between the fluid chamber 22 and a pressurized fluid source to allow fluid to flow into the chamber 22 and to restrict its reverse direction, and an axially movable plastic cap member 50 arranged in an upper end of the piston 40, having opening holes 61, 62 for allowing fluid flow to the atmosphere, capable of taking a closed position for preventing leaking of the fluid from the opening holes 61, 62 and an opened position for allowing leaking of the fluid to the atmosphere through the opening holes 61, 62.
