PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the damaging of a disk caused by the rubbing of a head when the disk is loaded. SOLUTION: The head carriage mechanism 25 of a magnetic disk device 10 locks a head carriage 18 to prevent the movement until a disk cartridge is loaded, excites a solenoid 98 to move a head arm 60 to a loading position with passage of specified time after the rotation of a disk motor is started, and operates to release the locking of the head carriage 18. Thus, even when external vibration or shocks are applied before the head arm 60 is moved to the loading position, the damaging of the disk caused by the rubbing of a magnetic head is prevented. In other words, the magnetic head is brought close to the magnetic disk rotated at a high speed to perform writing/reading without damaging the magnetic disk.
