<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical switch which changes over an incoming light signal to one of plural outputs in a transient optical communication system. SOLUTION: Plural glass waveguides GWL1,...GWL4 are constituted within a first plane. At least one polymer waveguide PWLA having an acute angle with these glass waveguides is constituted within the plane superposed on an upper side. A vertical direction coupling region is formed where the polymer waveguide described above intersects with the glass waveguides constituted on the lower side. The coupling characteristics may be selectively influenced by using heating electrodes EA1,...EA4; EB1,...EB4. The changing over of the light from the one glass waveguide to another glass waveguide is effected by coupling of the light set at the temperature of the vertical direction coupling region from the glass waveguide to above the polymer waveguide in which the light is introduced and is downwardly coupled into the desired glass waveguide within another coupling region.</p> |
