PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the method for extending the dynamic range of a charge coupled element image pickup device by applying a plurality of different applied voltage levels to a gate, in such a way that one level is applied to the gate in a long duration time and the succeeding level is applied to the gate in a short duration time. SOLUTION: A level in two voltage levels VG that is lower, i.e., a VG-LOW is applied to each gate over a storage well site in a long duration time and a level in the two voltage levels VG that is higher, i.e., a VG-HIGH is applied to each gate in a long duration time. A charge processing capacity in the well site while the level VG-LOW is applied to each gate is smaller than that while the level VG-HIGH is applied to each gate. Usually the level of the voltage VG-LOW is set so as to attain a maximum pixel well capacity that is equal to 25 to 50% of a complete 100% well capacity that can be attained by the voltage VG-HIGH. Furthermore, the duration time of the VG-LOW is ideal for sharing majority of the total storage time, and selected usually 90% or over.
