Vinylaromatic monomers are polymerized using as initiator <FORM:1015619/C3/1> where R is a tertiary alkyl or aralkyl radical, and R1 and R2 are a C1- 2 alkyl radical. The monomer may be styrene. The initiator may be 2,2 - bis (4,4 - ditert. - butyl - peroxy - cyclohexyl)-propane, e.g. 0.05-1%. The polymerization may be carried out at 70-200 DEG C. and may be in bulk or in aqueous emulsion including polyvinyl alcohol.ALSO:A peroxide of formula <FORM:1015619/C2/1> where R is a tert.-alkyl or aralkyl radical, and R1 and R2 are a C1- 2 alkyl radical, is obtained by reacting a compound of formula <FORM:1015619/C2/2> where R1 and R2 are as above, with a tert.-alkyl or aralkyl hydroperoxide, in the presence of an acid reacting catalyst and eliminating water from the reaction. In an example a benzene solution of 2,2-bis-(4-keto-cyclohexyl)-propane tert.-butyl-hydroperoxide and 70% sulphuric acid was heated at 40 DEG C.; the water formed was removed by azeotropic distillation with benzene; the reaction mixture was then treated with e.g. sodium bicarbonate and evaporated in vacuo to produce 2,2-bis-(4,4-di-tert.-butyl-peroxy-cyclohexyl)-propane. |
