In a melt-spinning apparatus comminuted solid filament-forming material flows from the feed hopper 4 (Fig. 1) through control valve 5 and pipe 6 into the cylinder 1. By rotation of the screw 7 the material is carried downward to the melting grid 9 through which the melt percolates and flows through the ducts 22 and 23 in the heating jacket to the metering pump 24. During the period of screw rotation, screw 7 and the thrust member 11 mounted on the upper part of the screw shaft ascend and raise the piston 18 against air at lower pressure introduced into the chamber 12 through the air line 19. When the screw 7 has reached a predetermined upper position a control disc 16 mounted on the shaft of the screw and ascending with it operates control switch 21 through lever 17 and rod 21. The power to motor 15 which rotates screw 7 through speed reducer 14 and member 13 is thereby shut off and simultaneously a signal is transmitted via electrical conductor 35 to solenoid-operated 3-way valve 31. The valve thereby cuts off the flow of lower pressure air received through line 32 and regulating valve 28 and permits higher pressure air received through line 29 and regulating valve 27 to pass into chamber 12 via line 19. Higher pressure air acting on piston 18 serves to urge the now non- rotating feed screw 7 downward forcing the melt through conduits 22, 23 to pump 24. When a predetermined lower limit of the feed screw 7 is reached, the switch 21 is closed by the control disc 16 and rotation of the feed screw thereby resumed. At the same time the solenoid-operated 3-way valve 31 is actuated to supply lower pressure air to the chamber 12. The pressure applied to the melt between grid 3 and pump 24 is thus automatically maintained at a constant value and the uniformity of the denier of the filaments produced thereby improved.
