PURPOSE: A device and a method for controlling the time of inflating an air bag are provided to divide the inflated zone of an air bag based on the present position of a passenger and to control the firing time of the air bag so as to inflate the air bag in the optimum condition on the generation of a collis ion accident based on the divided inflated zone. CONSTITUTION: A device is composed of a device for measuring a change of length of a safety belt, a device for measuring a change of a position of a chair, a microcomputer and an air bag ECU(40). Herein, the inflated zone of the air bag is divided into a red zone, an overlap zone and a green zone based on the result that the microcomputer outputs the present position of a passenger by a signal of sensing length and position. Then, if a control signal of folding/inflating the air bag is output, the air bag ECU inflates the air bag in the red zone by controlling the operation of an in flator module, folds the air bag in the green zone and folds or inflates the air bag in the overlap zone based on the speed of a vehicle and inflating the air bag.
