An ice bank cooler of improved performance is provided comprising a tank (10) to contain water and ice, an evaporator (11) connected to a refrigeration circuit, the evaporator being in the form of a spiral with one or more substantially vertical axes and being adapted to be immersed in the tank water (12) and means to circulate refrigerant through the coils of the spiral to cause freezing of the water adjacent the coils (11) to form a bank of ice (19) around the coils (11), characterised in that at least a portion (21) of the coils (11) of the spiral lie in closer proximity one to the other than coils in another portion or other portions (20) of the spiral to alleviate uneven erosion of the ice bank (19). |
