PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for synthronizing the movement of the sheet material passing through an apparatus and that of the printing head traversing the sheet material to perform printing so that the sheet material passes through the apparatus to continuously advance. SOLUTION: A printing head 86 having a plurality of printing elements arranged within a scanning arrangement extending in an X-coordinates direction is provided so as to be repeatedly movable with respect to an apparatus. In the scanning arrangement, the moving speed of the printing head at the time traversing a scanning section is constituted of a first speed component Vax in an X-direction and a second speed component Vay in the Y-direction vertical to the X-direction and, since the first speed component Vax is equal to the moving speed Vwx of a winding material 26, the scanning arrangement traversing the scanning section scans the row parallel to the Y-direction and having height hs on the winding material. The speed component Vay is set to such a value that the winding material advances in the X-direction by a distance hw within a time required when the arrangement traverses all of scanning sections.
