PURPOSE: A method for preparing l-muscone and d-muscone from d, l-muscone with high yield and high purity is provided. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of: (i) dissolving ketal compound of the starting material of the structural formula(I), which is represented by the following formula (IV), (V), (VI) or (VII), in an organic solvent in the existence of acid catalyst; (ii) heating the solution of the step (i) to hydrolyze; and (iii) extracting compound of the following structural formula(II) or (III) from the hydrolysate of the step (ii) with a nonpolar solvent. In the formulae (IV)-(VII), R is a methyl or an ethyl group, and R1 is a methyl, mesyl, benzyl or tosyl group.
