PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display is to prevent a color shift effect due to anisotropy of a liquid crystal molecule, which is not completely arranged horizontally or vertically to electric field upon driving the liquid crystal display, so as to improve picture quality. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal layer(12) is provided between an upper substrate(20) and a lower substrate(10). A counter electrode(11a) and a pixel electrode are provided on the lower substrate so as to drive the liquid crystal layer. Upper and lower alignment films, respectively are mounted on each face of the liquid crystal layer provided on the upper and lower substrate. A chiral dopant is mixed into the liquid crystal layer so as to rearrange a liquid crystal horizontally or vertically against an electric field. The alignment of alignment film on the lower substrate differs from the longitudinal direction of the counter electrode and the pixel electrode by 45 degrees. There is a difference in alignment between the alignment films on the upper and lower substrates by from 150 to 220 degrees or 180 degrees.
