PURPOSE: A shock absorber of cross member for an automobile provides a structure to absorb the impact sequentially, which is applied to the cross member upon a head-on collision of an automobile, so that a driver and passengers is protected safely. CONSTITUTION: A shock absorber of cross member for an automobile has a structure in which a longitudinal is mounted to a cross member having an upper and a lower plates and supporting an engine room. The structure comprises a first and a second guides(22b,31) having front open ends are formed on a front body mounting portion(22) and a rear body mounting portion(23) of the upper plate(20) as well as the opposite ends of the lower plate(30); a plural of rivetting holes(22c) formed on periphery areas of the first and the second guides(22b,31); and a reinforcement member(50) for reinforcing the upper and lower plates(20,30), in which through holes(52) are formed in a manner of corresponding to the first guides(22b) and the second guides(31) and then the reinforcement member is fastened and locked to the guides by a fastening device(45) and rivets(60). The reinforcement member is fastened and locked to the upper and the lower plates of the cross member supporting the engine room of an automobile by a plural of rivets made of synthetic resin material. Therefore, since the plurality of rivets is broken down one by one upon a head-on collision of an automobile, the crash impact is absorbed while the cross member slides downward to the longitudinal without any damages of the longitudinal, so that a driver and passengers is protected safely.
