PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To discriminate fluctuation as color change even when a distance with respect to a detecting object is fluctuated, and to stably detect a surface condition such as color of the object and glossiness. SOLUTION: Light emitted from a light emitting element 16 passes through a polarizing filter 17 to be brought into S-polarized light, so as to irradiate an object 26. The light reflected by the object 26 is separated by a polarized beam splitter 21 into P-polarized light and S-polarized light, the S-polarized light is received by a light receiving element 19, and the P-polarized light is received by a position detecting element 20. A distance operation part 39 finds a distance fluctuating amount of the object 26 based on a signal output from the position detecting element 20, and a correction factor outputting part 40 outputs a correction factorαto a determining part 41 based on the distance fluctuating amount. The determining part 41 generates a signal for determining glossiness based on the outputs of the elements 19, 20, and corrects an output thereof at the same time using the correction factorα.
