PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To irradiate an object with the light of proper quantity at all the time and also speedily control the quantity of light corresponding to the lightness of the object with respect to an endoscope device. SOLUTION: Inside a processor 10 of the endoscope device, a histogram processing circuit 16, diaphragm control device 17, diaphragm 18 and CPU 22 are provided. The quantity of light radiated from a light source 19 to a body cavity S is adjusted by opening/closing the diaphragm 18 and the image of the body cavity S is formed on an imaging device 31. A luminance value is inputted to the histogram processing circuit 16 at fixed time intervals, histogram processing is performed and a representative value is calculated. When the representative value is equal to the last calculated representative value, the diaphragm 18 is not opened/closed. When the representative value is not equal to the last calculated representative value, the diaphragm 18 is opened/ closed.
