PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read an image without being affected by a difference from density of a transmission original in an image region corresponding to a window by automatically identifying a type of a holder means holding a plurality of films thereby accurately reading the image in a read range depending on the type of the holder means identified by the operation of a subscanning means and a lighting means. SOLUTION: Upper and lower holders 20a, 20b are connected and turned by a hinge 14a and a hinge holder 14b to clamp a transmission original with a length of 6 frames of 35 mm film negative sheet and an adaptor 20c holds the original. This film holder for an APS film holder is mounted on a film mount and windows 21-24 are used to identify the type of holder whether the holder is a 35 mm holder, an APS holder or a mount slide film holder. Depending on the identification result of the transmission original, each of lighting, image pickup and subscanning means is controlled to automatically set a read range and a read condition of an image. Thus, the image can accurately be read without being affected by a base density of the transmission original and the image components.
