PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficiency by decreasing a first scanning time. SOLUTION: When a book original BO is placed on a book original platen 105 of a book tray 103 and the book tray 103 is pushed into a scanner main body and set, a carriage 200 immediately starts preliminary scanning to detect ends of left and right pages of the book original BO. Then the carriage 200 stops around a file margin of the book original BO and reaches a standby state. When a scanning instruction is received, the carriage 200 quickly moves to the read start position based on the page end position data obtained at the preliminary scanning to start reading.
