PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a document fed on a contact glass pane from being in contact with the face of the contact glass by providing a flat part in parallel with the face of the contact glass to a feeding guide and placing the flat part in the vicinity of a read position so that part thereof is overlapped with the contact glass. SOLUTION: This automatic document feeder 100 is mounted on an upper part of an image reader 200 and a white guide 18 is provided on the lower face (upper face of a contact glass pane 12). A feeding guide 13 having a flat part overlapped partly when the contact glass 12 and in parallel with the face of the contact glass is placed to an upper-stream from a read position of the contact glass 12 so that the document is non-contact state with the contact glass 12 at the read position. A tip of the flat part is placed so as not to interrupt an exposure path in the vicinity of the center of exposure. Moreover, an exposure focus in the image reader 20 is set to a gap between a face of the feeding guide 12 including the flat part and a white reference face of the white guide 18.
