PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the flexibility of operation by specifying an area to be a copying destination in an image and movably displaying the image representing the specified area so as to edit the image area of the copying destination designated in advance. SOLUTION: A copying destination area is painted out and designated in image data 201 to determine the copying destination area to display. Then, with the movement of the instructed position after determining the copying destination area, a contour image 204 in the same shape as the determined copying destination area 202 is displayed at a position instructed by a mouse so as to avoid overlapping with a copying destination area 203. At the same time, data specifying a copying source area are housed in RAM and the pixel value of the copying source area is copied to the pixel value of the copying destination area to display a copying result. An operator judges the result and when it is satisfactory, clicks, etc., a mouse button at the position to input determination of the position to finish processing.
