PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain high coercive force and low noise without changing the compsn. and film forming conditions of a magnetic layer by forming a diffusion preventing layer which does not chemically react with a magnetic layer on the deposition surface of the magnetic layer. SOLUTION: A diffusion preventing layer 4 which does not chemically react with a magnetic layer 3 is formed on the deposition surface of the magnetic layer 3 so as to prevent formation of a carbide layer which adversely affects the magnetic characteristics, thereby obtaining high coercive force and low noise in a magnetic recording medium. If the diffusion preventing layer 4 has high hardness and excellent weather resistance, the diffusion preventing layer 4 can simultaneously be used as a protective layer 5. When the diffusion preventing layer 4 does not have enough hardness or weather resistance, a protective layer 5 is formed on the surface of the diffusion preventing layer 4. Since, in this case the diffusion preventing layer 4 is present even when the protective layer 5 is formed, no carbide layer is formed.
