PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and inexpensive image reader that can photograph an original large in size. SOLUTION: This image reader 1 is configured to scan and photograph an original M while moving the original M intermittently in a direction of one side of the original to read an image on a read side of the original M. The image reader is provided with a plurality of two-dimensional image pickup devices 10a1-10a6 that convert an image of the read side of the original M formed on a photographing plane consisting of a plurality of two-dimensionally arranged pixels into an electric signal for ach pixel and provide an output, where a plurality of the two-dimensional image pickup devices 10a1-10a6 are placed on a line along a direction orthogonal to an original carrying direction opposite to the read side of the original M.
