PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record a still picture having the number of pixels larger than that in the regulation of an MPEG (moving picture image coding experts group) concurrently with the recording of sound, to fast display the recording contents in a list on a multi-screen even when these contents are moved on a personal computer, etc., and furthermore to improve the possibility to attain the target recording time even when the still picture is encoded at a variable rate. SOLUTION: An AV packet 100 consisting of a packet header 110 including a sound code ID 111 and an image code ID 112, a sound part 120 consisting of continuous sound access units and an image part 130 consisting of continuous still picture access units is recorded. At the same time, an AV packet 100 consisting of the JPEG(joint photographic experts group) codes including a thumbnail image 132 is recorded on an optical disk. Furthermore, the accumulation of code excess value that is calculated for every shot is separately recorded.
