PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the long term preservability of image information without inviting the drastic increase of data quantity and also to perform correction regardless of the size of a damaged part. SOLUTION: This image recording and reproducing device has an IC card 11 where original image data are recorded, an image compression circuit 17 which compresses the original image data read from the card 11 and generates 1/4 compressed image data and 1/16 compressed image data, a disk driver 16 which records the original image data and the compressed image data on a magneto-optical disk 15 where the possibility that the both of them are damaged at the same time is small and also reads the image data recorded on the disk 15 and an image correcting part which supplements and corrects a damaged part taking place in the read original image data with the compressed image data.
