The method involves using a buffer memory which enables packets to be read at chosen rate, independent of the reception rate. The method provides for recovery of data transmitted in packets, carried in sections by the transport packets (TP). The process includes writing the packets (TP) into a buffer memory at the rate at which the packets are received. The buffer memory (4) is of sufficient size to store several packets within it. The packets are then extracted in order to restore their data, by reading from the memory at a rate which is independent of the writing rate. An Independent claim is included for a data receiver suitable for executing the method.
