PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display device which is short in the back of a projection optical system and is capable of displaying bright images of a high contrast. SOLUTION: The projection type image display device has prisms 41 and 42 formed with polarized beam splitter(PBS) reflection films 41a and 42a. Reflection type liquid crystal panels 31 and 32 and transmission type liquid crystal panels 33, (34) are arranged on both sides of the PBS reflection films 41a and 42a. The green light of the S polarized light is made incident on the prisms 41 and 42 from a direction heading toward the transmission type liquid crystal panels 33, (34), is reflected by the PBS reflection films 41a and 42a and is introduced to the reflection type liquid crystal panels 31 and 32. The blue light of the S polarized light is introduced to the transmission type liquid crystal panels 33, (34) from the side opposite to the prisms 41 and 42. The green light modulated by the reflection type liquid crystal panels 31 and 32 to the P polarized light and the green light of the S polarized light remaining after the modulation by the transmission type liquid crystal panels 33, (34) are synthesized by the PBS reflection films 41a and 42a and the red light modulated by other liquid crystal panels is further synthesized therewith. The synthesized light is projected to display the color images.
