PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a vertical alignment(VA) type liquid crystal display device of a normally black type operated at a low voltage with a low power consumption, capable of being made thin and having a wide angle of visibility by specifying the retardation value of a film. SOLUTION: The film having the retardation value of 5-25 nm is used as the polarizing plate protective film 1 for the polarizing plate 3 in a super twisted nematic(STN) type liquid crystal display device. The film is particularly for the protective film 1 in the polarizing plate 3 of the VA type liquid crystal display device, is a film consisting essentially of a lower fatty acid ester of cellulose and has the retardation value of 5-25 nm (particularly >=8 nm and further >=10 nm, <=20 nm and further <=15 nm). The thickness of the polarizing plate protective film 1 is 30-100 μm. In such a case, as the film material, various kinds of polymers are used and one consisting essentially of polycarbonate or the lower fatty acid ester of cellulose is preferably used. |
