PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the operation by discriminating a character communication system from received character information and transmitting the character information according to the discriminated character communication system so as to eliminate the need for troublesome selection of the communication system of the transmission opposite party. SOLUTION: In the case that a character is entered before designation of a destination, when entry of character data is finished, presence of KANJI (Chinese characters) of the entered data and number of characters are discriminated, and when no KANJI is used and number of the characters is 20 characters or below, a system A with a limited character kind and a limited number of characters at a low cost is used and when not, a system B at a higher cost regardless of a higher degree of freedom of font type and number of characters is used to generate transmission data. When the data are generated, an address name corresponding to the discriminated character communication system is retrieved from a RAM: 19 and the addresses are listed on a display section 21, and the user selects an address (y) using a touch panel 22 and the data are transmitted to the selected address. Thus, a communication system corresponding to contents of the character data is automatically discriminated and the transmission operation can be transited by having only to optionally select a corresponding destination and then the user-friendliness can be enhanced.
