The present invention relates to substantially mercury free alkaline electrochemical cells which provide an effective amount of electrochemical energy and as such are useful as batteries, which cells comprise a metal oxide containing cathode, a zinc containing anode, an alkaline electrolyte and an anode current collector, wherein the current collector is burnished and has a layer of indium ions on its surface. Treatment of the anode current collector in this way overcomes the need for addition of mercury to reduce gas formation, without compromising the effectiveness of the cell. Processes for preparation of the current collectors are also provided. |
