PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To convert a resolution of a binary image and then of a multi-value image with excellent resolution and gradation by generating a difference between an N(>=2)-value signal and a signal after an arithmetic operation for a difference signal for a pixel and using the difference signal when surrounding pixels not converted are converted. SOLUTION: This method converts, e.g. received binary image data into, e.g. binary image data with different resolution, and image data for converting resolution of the image are received via an input interface 2. A CPU 1 applies binary processing to an arithmetic result of a sum of a value resulting from weight-summing each adjacent pixel value before conversion at an image position after the conversion in terms of a distance and of a value resulting from weight-summing a difference signal produced in surrounding pixels of a pixel after the conversion attended with binary processing in terms of a distance with respect to a prescribed threshold value. The difference signal between the binary signal and the arithmetic result is produced as a difference signal for a pixel and used for the conversion of surrounding pixels that are not converted.
