PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface conductive type electron emitting element in which stable electron emitting characteristic can be obtained for a long period of time. SOLUTION: In an electron emitting element having a conductive film 4 including an electron emitter 5 between a pair of elemental electrodes 2, 3, an insulating film 6 having an opening 8 is formed in a region including the electron emitter 5 on a part of the element or the entire element. A non- evaporation type getter layer 7 is laid on the insulating film 6.
