A brake beam assembly containing a compression member (54), a tension member (52), a strut (22) connected to the tension member and the compression member, and two brake heads with recesses. The ends of the compression member and the tension member are disposed within the recesses of the brake heads together with at least one fastener per recess; and each of the fasteners is substantially perpendicular to the tension and compression members.
