The stair-step grate bars are arranged one behind the other and are of generally T-shaped cross-section. The edges of the crossbars of the Ts are in close contact and are joggled to give a narrow passage which allows very little material to fall through. Cool air to support combustion is fed through these narrow passages. The head or crossbar of each T-shape (9) has a projecting part (13) on top on the left with a sloping bottom surface (16), and there is a projecting part (14) on the right with a sloping top surface (19). An S-shaped labyrinth air passage is formed between adjacent grate bars.
