A lifting device(50) is installed on the body(10) of the vehicle to enable the spare wheel to be raised from the stored position to a withdrawal position. In its withdrawal position the spare wheel stands at least with one side approximately level with the floor of the boot(12). The lifting device has a pivotable support(52) with a load bearing element(54) upon which lies the wheel and which in the stored position lies upon the floor of the spare wheel storage compartment(24).
