An inlet valve in a multi-cylinder piston engine functions in a fluid feed channel, supplying fluid in a controlled manner into a work chamber enclosed by a cylinder and the face end of a piston. An outlet valve is connected to a fluid discharge channel for controlled feed-out of fluid from the work chamber. The inlet valve and/or outlet valve of each cylinder/piston unit is formed by one of the other cylinder/piston units, of which the movable piston acts as valve body and limits at least one connecting channel, which on a part of the movement path of the piston connects two part pieces of the fluid feed conduit and/or the fluid discharge conduit.
