The transport device has a first conveyor (2) for feeding the individual sheets (20) to a transfer region (C) and a second conveyor (8) for subsequent transport of overlapping sheets (18) received from the transfer region. A control device (40) regulates the force applied for providing the overlap between successive sheets at the transfer region, in dependence on the operating parameters of the sheet transport device, e.g. the transport rate and/or the number of overlapping sheets, the sheet characteristics, e.g. the thickness and/or specific weight and environmental parameters, e.g. the temperature and/or humidity.
