The operational method is carried out, so that respectively only one exhaust gas turbocharger is actively taken in to operation. The actual value of characteristic variable is measured and is compared with a specified desired value. With an unpermitted deviation of the actual value from the desired value, it is changed over by the control signal between the exhaust gas turbochargers (2,9). A condition variable of the internal combustion engine (1) as a characteristic variable is measured and compared with a desired value.
