The sensor has an axially aligned coil system built into a housing with at least three electromagnetically or magnetically coupled coils. Two of the coils (2,3) are connected in series to produce a difference voltage of the voltages in both coils and the first coil (1) is connected to a high frequency generator (7) as a generator coil. The signal applied to the detector coil and to the generator coil is fed to a four quadrant mixer (9).
