<p>A method and system of accessing data from an external memory device in a microcontroller application in which the width of the read enable pulse (40) is selectable under program control, such that a dual application protocol can be implemented. The microcontroller application program can specify which type of read pulse (40) operations to use to read out a memory location. Subsequent read operations will then assert the read enable signal for the specified length of time. The present invention allows a user to operate the microcontroller using the traditional read protocol known in the prior art, as well as providing the user with the ability to change the width of the read pulse in order to allow more time for data to be accessed. This permits slow memory devices to be used in a fast clock environment.</p> |
