PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the use efficiency of a bus between an input/output controller and a channel device. SOLUTION: This data transfer device is equipped with a central processing unit(CPU) 2 which performs operations according to inputted instructions, a main storage device(main memory) 4 which stores data operated by the central processing unit 2, an input/output controller 6 which controls data transfer between the main storage device 4 and input/output devices 14 (14a to 14d), and channel devices 12 (12a to 12d) connected to the input/output controller 6 by a bus. Further, the channel devices 12 are equipped with channel compressing means 10 (10a to 10d) which compress the data inputted from the input/output devices 14 and output the compressed data to the input/output controller through the bus 1. Then the input/output control means 6 is equipped with an expanding means 18 which expands the data inputted from the channel compressing means 10 of the channel devices 12.
