The hydrodynamic converter (1) has a bridging coupling (10) operated across a piston (12) by a differential pressure between a supply (14) and a return line, and is subjected to a cooling oil flow, which is controlled depending on the temp of the oil. A bypass (13) is provided radially within the frictional surfaces (11,25) of the bridging coupling (10), which is controlled by a temp. dependent control valve (23).
