The invention relates to a gas sensor which works according to the principle of measuring work functions. Said gas sensor comprises a t least one gas-sensitive layer whose electrical conductivity during adsorption and desorption of at least one gas can be changed and a device for producing an electric field which penetrates at least a part of the gas-sensitive layer. The desorption time of a gas from the gas-sensitive layer can be adjusted by means of the electric field.
