A prostatic tissue expander can include a urethral catheter, a positioning balloon disposed about the urethral catheter, an expander balloon disposed about the urethral catheter, and a containment assembly disposed about the expander balloon, wherein the containment assembly limits a degree of distension of the expander balloon, and the fiber patterns of the containment assembly are exposed. Such a prostatic tissue expander can further include additional reinforcements and cuffs. These prostatic tissue expanders may be expandable up to about 150 French. A method for positioning a prostatic tissue expander and a method for treating benign prostatic hypertrophy can include steps wherein a positioning balloon is inflated and then deflated leaving an expander balloon to hold the prostatic tissue expander in place. The method for positioning a prostatic tissue expander can be used in a method for treating benign prostatic hypertrophy. An article of manufacture can include packaging material and a prostatic tissue expander contained within the packaging material, the packaging material can further contain a label or package insert indicating that inserting a prostatic tissue expander within a urethra of a patient, inflating a positioning balloon so as to properly position an expander balloon within a portion of the urethra being within a prostate of the patient, inflating the expander balloon so as to secure the prostatic tissue expander within the urethra of the patient, and deflating the positioning balloon can be effective for treating a patient suffering from benign prostate hypertrophy.
